Mission statement

Why MoonUnity

MoonUnity preserves, teaches and funds the music that connects the world — so that the method of Mr. MoonJune outlives Mr. MoonJune.

MoonUnity is the legacy arm of the MoonJune ecosystem. Where MoonJune Records and MoonJune Booking are the business — label, tours, festival, the Japanese market — MoonUnity is the mission: the institution that transmits Leonardo Pavkovic's method, catalyses new and unrepeatable music, and channels patronage so that all of it becomes sustainable.

Leonardo Pavkovic has spent twenty-five years doing something almost nobody else does: putting musicians from opposite traditions in the same room and getting a body of work out of it that did not exist before. More than 150 productions. More than 3,000 concerts. A network that reaches from Barcelona to Jakarta, from Canterbury to New York.

That is not information you can sell as an online course. It is access, catalysis and trust — and the honest way to keep it alive is to institutionalise it: preserve the archive, teach the method to a next generation, and commission the music that would otherwise never be recorded.

MoonUnity exists so that when the founder is no longer in the room, the room still happens.

What MoonUnity is

Three pillars

One institution, three jobs: hand the method on, make the music that would not otherwise exist, and build the community that pays for both.

01

Transmission

the legacy · the teaching

The Modus Moonjundi turned into a method that can be handed on.

  • The memoir and the biographical documentary “Leonardo / An Improvised Life” as anchor pieces.
  • A living archive: 150+ productions, 3,000+ concerts, and the Canterbury / Soft Machine history that only Leonardo carries.
  • The Modus Moonjunity Lab — a selective apprenticeship for 2–4 young curators and managers a year, learning by doing, alongside Leonardo. Small, premium, fully funded.

02

Catalysis

the experimental work

The La Casa Murada model turned into an engine for commissions.

  • MoonUnity funds and produces impossible encounters — musicians who have never played together.
  • What comes out is not a €15 record: it is a commissioned work, with the patron's name attached to it forever.
  • Every session is documented: an album, a process film, and a limited physical edition.

03

Community & Patronage

the funding

The moonjunistas already exist, and they travel from 30 countries.

  • That is not an audience — it is a congregation. It becomes a patron circle with tiers.
  • Donations routed through a Law 49/2002 foundation, so patrons can deduct them.
  • Alongside public funding and the big foundations, this is the economic base of the whole institution.

MoonUnity Commissions

Bands that have never existed

The one thing MoonJune can do that nobody else can: assemble a line-up that has never shared a stage, put it in a room for a week, and record what comes out. A patron does not buy a record — a patron makes the band happen.

Strategy, objectives & goals

How it gets built

Four strategic decisions, three horizons, and four institutions that already proved the model works.

Separate the business from the mission

MoonJune stays exactly as it is — label, booking, festival, Japan. MoonUnity is the non-profit side: education, archive, commissions, patronage. Two engines, one ecosystem.

Start inside an existing foundation, not from zero

A brand-new association cannot give donors a tax deduction until it is declared of public utility — two to three years away. Hosted inside a Law 49/2002 foundation, MoonUnity can issue deduction certificates from day one.

Lead with patronage, not with product

No mass online course. The first product is a commission a patron sponsors — the Kronos and Silkroad model, which is how every conductor-figure of this level actually funds their work.

Turn the moonjunistas into members

People already fly in from 30 countries. Give them a tier, a certificate, their name on the work, and a way in.

Roadmap

Year 0–1

  • Mecenazgo agreement signed and the MoonUnity trademark registered.
  • Crowdfunding campaign opens: €15,000–20,000 of start-up capital.
  • The patron circle opens and the first MoonUnity Commission is funded.
  • First applications to AC/E PICE, INAEM and Creative Europe.

Year 1–3

  • The Modus Moonjunity Lab takes its first 2–4 apprentices.
  • Second and third cycle of commissions.
  • Memoir and documentary released, and used to reach major donors.

Year 3+

  • If the volume justifies it, MoonUnity becomes an independent foundation — by then with accounts, history and the standing to obtain public-utility status quickly.
  • Starts supported, ends autonomous.

The model is proven

Silkroad — Yo-Yo Ma

The same profile as Leonardo: an intercultural connector. A non-profit foundation with roughly $4M a year — only $0.6M from concerts, $2.5M from grants and donations.

Intercultural work is funded by philanthropy. The box office is secondary.

Kronos — Fifty for the Future

Fifty new works commissioned and the scores given away free, funded by Carnegie Hall and a network of foundations and donors.

The commission model for Pillar 2. Giving knowledge away increases standing.

Robert Fripp — Guitar Craft

In Leonardo's own orbit. A method turned into residential courses: 3,000 students, and Trey Gunn and the California Guitar Trio came out of it.

Proof that handing a method to the next generation is a proven format. Pillar 1.

Aga Khan Music · Real World

Intercultural patronage and residency studios funded by private philanthropy.

Real World is La Casa Murada. One patron can fund an entire cultural bridge.

Partnerships

Who MoonUnity stands on

MoonUnity does not start from zero. It starts inside structures that already work.

The host foundation

Fiscal host · SpainBeing set up

MoonUnity is being set up as an experimental laboratory hosted inside an established Spanish foundation already covered by Law 49/2002 — the status that allows tax-deduction certificates to be issued from day one. The structure below is what is being negotiated; the foundation will be named here once the agreement is signed.

Ring-fenced fund
Money donated to MoonUnity can only be spent on MoonUnity, in a separate account.
Artistic autonomy
Leonardo directs the laboratory; the foundation's board keeps legal control of the funds.
Protected trademark
“MoonUnity” is registered to Leonardo / MoonJune and licensed to the programme.
Agreed overhead
10% of each donation covers the foundation's administration and certification; 90% goes to the programme.

Sister organisation

MoonJune Records

Twenty-five years and 150+ productions. The commercial engine stays independent and helps sustain the mission.

Platform

MoonJune Fest

The festival in Italy and Spain — where the moonjunistas already gather in person every year.

Target

Public and European funding

INAEM, AC/E PICE for artist mobility, Fundación SGAE, regional and municipal support, and Creative Europe for cross-border cooperation.

Profiles

Who is behind it

Leonardo Pavkovic

Founder

Born in the former Yugoslavia, formed in New York, based between Barcelona and Italy. Founder of MoonJune Records and MoonJune Booking, and the producer behind more than 150 albums and 3,000 concerts across four continents.

He is the reason musicians as far apart as Canterbury progressive rock, Indonesian fusion, Spanish flamenco and American jazz end up on the same record. Legends work with him because they trust the person, not a corporation.

Oswaldo Gómez

Marketing strategist · Associate

Musician and marketing strategist based in Toledo, Spain. Runs campaigns for independent labels and artists, and co-directs the documentary “Leonardo / An Improvised Life”.

At MoonUnity he is responsible for the patronage strategy, the communication of the campaign and the relationship with the host foundation.

The founding circle

The campaign opens in October 2026. The people on this list hear first, choose their tier first, and are the ones whose names go on the founding list. Twenty-five years of moonjunistas — this is where you say you’re one of them.

Name, email and country only. Used to tell you about the campaign and the commissions — never sold, never passed on. Unsubscribe any time.

Questions

Straight answers

Is MoonUnity the same thing as MoonJune Records?

No. MoonJune Records is the label and stays a normal business. MoonUnity is the non-profit side — education, archive, commissions and patronage. They share a founder and an ecosystem, not a bank account.

Why not simply create a new foundation?

A new foundation needs around €30,000 of endowment and months of paperwork, and a plain cultural association cannot give donors a deduction for two to three years. Hosting the programme inside an existing Law 49/2002 foundation gives MoonUnity that from day one, at almost no start-up cost.

Where does my donation actually go?

Into a ring-fenced account that can only be spent on MoonUnity. 10% covers the host foundation's administration and the issuing of your certificate; 90% funds the programme.

Can I get a tax deduction?

Yes, once the mecenazgo agreement is signed — which happens before the campaign opens. The foundation issues the certificate; individuals in Spain deduct 45% and companies 40%.

When does the campaign open?

October 2026. Join the founding circle now and you will be told first, with the founding tiers open before the public launch.

Are the artists in the example line-up confirmed?

No. That line-up is an illustration of the kind of encounter MoonJune's network makes possible. Artists are confirmed for each commission once it is funded.
